I am trying to make a list of which BDs have Traditional Chinese (Complex Mandarin) subtitles. My wife is Taiwanese, and she prefers BDs that have Traditional Mandarin subtitles.

She can deal with BDs that have Cantonese, as characters are the same, but gets lost sometimes because the slang and idioms are different in Mandarin. Many BD cases even just have Chinese listed as a subtitle. Very frustrating as 'Chinese' could be Complex Mandarin, Simplified Mandarin, or Cantonese. Please post all your US and UK Blu-rays that have Traditional Chinese (Complex Mandarin) subtitles. I think there is a thread at AVS dedicated to this topic. Yup, here is a link:.

It's a shame the studios aren't more explicit about language variants they use for audio and subtitles since there are others as well that could use clarification sometimes (e.g. Spanish, Portuguese, French variants) - even when this is denoted on the packaging, it's not always correct. The situation is a little bit of a mess, since as far as I know the discs themselves are encoded with only very generic language identifier tags (e.g. 'Chinese' instead of Mandarin/Cantonese audio, Traditional/Simplified script) and many discs have 'empty' subtitle tracks, so even reviewers / other disc owners will have a hard time reporting this 100% accurately unless they know the language. You really have to have a fluent speaker/reader pop in the disc and verify the individual tracks by ear/eye. Thanks for the AVS link, but it seems to be a tad old and the additions made to the original list don't specify if the subs are Cantonese or traditonal Mandarin.

Wondering if anyone knows what Chinese subtitles are on Iron Man, Simpsons, Indiana Jones 4, The Dark Knight, Band of Brothers, Kung-fu panda, Godfather or any other must buy new releases. Don't want to wait 6 months or longer for their releases in Taiwan if I don't have to. You just check the 'Movies' section of blu-ray.com and will find detailed subtitles information on each title. Under 'Movies' at blu-ray.com, it states Chinese as a subtitle for some movies. I think the point made in the AVS thread is that most of those domestic releases that specify only 'Chinese' without further clarification are usually Traditional Mandarin and when Simplified or Cantonese are present instead (or in addition to Traditional) then this is usually stated as such in the packaging or disc menus. Obviously, 'most' may not be satisfactory for making blind purchasing decisions, especially if you are importing these and don't have a simple return option. As far as some of the specific titles you asked about, these titles definitely have no Chinese subtitles of any kind: Iron Man, Indy 4 and Kung Fu Panda.

Not sure about The Godfather, The Dark Knight and Band of Brothers, but it appears that they probably do not have Chinese subtitles either. I can't read Chinese to differentiate between the different types, but it's pretty obvious when the subtitles are not there at all!
