Mac Os X Snow Leopard 64 Bit
Sep 07, 2009 Snow Leopard 10.6 is the first Mac OS X version to ship with a 64 bit kernel, and obviously your Mac has to have a 64 bit processor to utilize that kernel. Even with Snow Leopard installed, many applications remains in 32-bit. I've listed my apps still in in 32-bit: Adobe Reader Firefox QuickSilver iTunes.
(this is a duplicate post because I posted it somewhere where I wouldn't get many related helps - hope it does better here!) Hi, Hope you can help. My Mac Mini = 2Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM. I assumed that Snow Leopard would run fully 64bit when I upgraded.
I guess I assumed wrong? I checked my Mac Mini using a 3rd party app and got these results: 64 bit processor 64 bit EFI 64 bit kernel boot mode 32 bit kernel. Why is it using the 32 bit kernel? I also checked the System Profiler and '64-bit kernel and extensions' is set to 'No'. I finally checked the 'extensions' in System Profiler and all except the following 8 extensions are 64-bit ready: System6.0 Mach6.0 Libkern6.0 IOKit6.0 CHUDUtils CHUDProf CHUDKernlib BSDKernel6.0 Since upgrading I can honestly say I have not noticed any difference what-so-ever, this could be because I previously upgraded the RAM from 1GB to 4GB and got a nice speed boost from that. So to sum up, should I be able ro run 64-bit?
And if not, and I'm stuck with 'virtual' 64-bit with no noticeable difference, why did I bother buying the upgrade? It was definately not made clear anywhere that I would have a reduced version with no noticeable difference in computing power nor added/upgraded apps, everything works precisely how it did before. Mac Mini, Mac OS X (10.5.7) Posted on Sep 5, 2009 5:01 PM. Most Macs will run the 32 bit kernel by default, even if they are able to run the 64 bit version. It is necessary to hold down the 6 and 4 keys when starting up in order to switch to the 64 bit kernel.
You should keep in mind that even with the 32 bit kernel, your Mac will be able to run 64 bit applications. Most people say that a 64 bit kernel doesn't affect your performance significantly, and a 64 bit kernel requires all 64 bit drivers. Furthermore, some Macs that can run a 64 bit kernel will not use it even if you hold down the 6 and 4 keys. Sep 5, 2009 5:13 PM. Hi seanmcgpa, I've made a couple of posts on the Apple forums to try and get a response but no joy, from this point I am giving up.
I have to say I am extremely disappointed with Snow Leopard. I pay £25 for an update which has enhanced my Mac Mini's performace.

I got a performance increase from increasing its RAM which was OK, and nothing from SL. So why did I buy it? Why did the marketing appeal so much that I just had to have it? Why did I defend Apple on a UK tech forum until I had exhausted all means of reasonable speech? I feel Apple has wasted my time and I have wasted my money. There should have been a massive disclaimer on Apples site to tell Mac Mini owners it would be a complete waste of their time and money to bother upgrading. Apple has transformed me from a defender of their crown back into an Apple hater, I really can't believe I have been suckered into this after so many attempts at defending them.

'£25 for an update is ridiculous!' They were shouting. 'It's not just an update, its 64 BIT and loads of enhancements!' What a joke, well, joke on me anyways. Back to my collection of PC's.
At least I've spent £25 more than the Snow Leopard upgrade and I'll get Win7 as a whole, complete, new OS. Maybe everyone was right about Apple all along. It's been a crap update for me, I just hope you guys with the iMacs and Macbooks etc get to feel the benefit of the update.
